SEC Division of Examinations Releases Updated Exam Handbook
The SEC's Division of Examinations has published a new handbook replacing its previous brochure, offering expanded guidance on exam process and engagement.
The Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Examinations has released a new official handbook designed to give registrants a clearer picture of how the agency conducts its oversight reviews, the SEC announced Tuesday.
The publication, titled "The SEC Exam Handbook: A Practical Guide on Process and Engagement," supersedes the division's earlier examination brochure. According to the agency, the updated document both replaces and expands upon that prior material, providing more detailed guidance on examination procedures and how firms can expect to interact with examiners throughout the process.

The handbook's release signals the division's effort to increase transparency around its examination function, which serves as a critical front-line tool for investor protection and market integrity. By publishing a more comprehensive reference document, the SEC aims to help regulated entities better prepare for and navigate the examination experience.
The Division of Examinations oversees a broad range of market participants, including investment advisers, broker-dealers, and transfer agents, among others. Clearer procedural guidance could reduce friction during reviews and help smaller firms without dedicated compliance staffs understand their obligations when examiners arrive.
